Update:
We were the only ones who showed up at the
Statehouse on behalf of our scooter riders to defeat the proposed Drivers &
Insurance Amendment. At this time, it seems that it has a 50/50 chance of
passing.
We are currently working with an insurance
company to provide insurance for our riders, hopefully it's cost will be
around $125.00. Stay tuned, we'll post additional updates as they become
available.
NOTE:
Our last Hands-On Safety Program Training was a success. More safety
training will be scheduled next spring.
=================================
House Bill 1334 is a bill
being introduced to reclassify 49cc scooters requiring riders to acquire a
State Drivers License and to purchase liability insurance.
September 20th at the Statehouse in
Indianapolis, some of the issues that will be debated are financial
responsibility, scooter safety and theft.
The Scooter Stop ownership feels that parents
should be responsible riders under the age of 18, that the appropriate
safety gear be made mandatory on all scooters and that the speed limit be
raised from 25 to 30 mph to address traffic flow safety concerns.
Our local police officers are catching hell
because they're expected to be everywhere at the same time and irresponsible
and unsafe scooter riders along with thefts are only making the situation
worse.**
Perhaps
tighter fines and/or confiscation of scooters and maybe a point of purchase
tax is in order to cover the overtime labor costs associated with scooter
thefts.
**
By the way, scooter thefts have become a big
issue with law enforcement, so we recommend removal of your kick starter.
